The Mercedes-Benz 300 SL was produced by the German automaker since 1954 and synthesized design, elegance and luxury. The 300 SL, where the abbreviation stands for Sport Leicht, that is Sport Light, adopted innovative solutions for the time. The Mercedes coupe had a tubular chassis and a 2,996 cc front longitudinal engine and a maximum speed of 260 km/h. The transmission was 4-speed with rear wheel drive. The real strength of the car was, however, in its innovative design and in the adoption of the characteristic opening of the doors hinged above the roof that influenced its name. The Mercedes 300 SL coupé was in fact known worldwide as Gullwing for the aesthetic solution adopted.
