The German Tiger I heavy tank, introduced in 1942 to counter the Russian T34, was a formidable design despite minor mechanical issues. From July 1943 to January 1944, mid-production Tigers featured several improvements, including a redesigned cupola with seven periscopes, Zimmerit coating, a central headlamp, and the removal of turret pistol ports. These tanks retained rubber-rimmed road wheels, though outer wheels were often removed in harsh Eastern Front terrain. Approximately 470 mid-production units were built, primarily deployed on the Eastern Front.
